How to turn a CSV into a map

Three steps, from the sheet you already keep to a map on your page.

  1. 1

    Drop your sheet

CSV or Excel, with a heading row. Name, Latitude and Longitude are picked up in any order.

  2. 2

    Check what will map

See your rows, how many have coordinates, which need an address looked up, and why any can't go on.

  3. 3

    Sign in and publish

Make a map opens with your places already on it. Share the link or paste one line of embed code.

Addresses only?

Plot addresses from Excel on a map

If your sheet has addresses but no coordinates, drop it anyway. After you sign in, each address is looked up and given a latitude and longitude, then you make a map from the table in one click.

Never upload twice

The rows you check here are the rows you get in the app. No second file picker.

Your file stays on your computer

The preview is built in your browser. Nothing leaves until you choose Make a map.

Questions

How do I make a map from a spreadsheet?

Give each place its own row with a name and either a latitude and longitude or an address. Drop the file on this page to check it, then sign in. Make a map opens with your places already on it, ready to publish as a link or an embed.

Can I plot addresses from Excel without coordinates?

Yes. Sheets with addresses open in Takeout Tools after you sign in, where each address is looked up and given coordinates, using rows from your balance. Then choose Make a map from the table.

What columns does my CSV need?

A Name column, plus Latitude and Longitude or an address. Column order doesn't matter. A Category, Type or List column gives each group its own pin colour, and a Notes column shows when someone taps a pin.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The preview on this page is built in your browser and the file never leaves your computer. Your places only go to Takeout Tools when you choose Make a map and sign in.

How many places can one map show?

Up to 2,000 places per map. Pins close together group into numbered clusters and split apart as visitors zoom in.
